The Importance Of Quality Sleep

Good sleep is often hard to come by; we live busy, sometimes stressful lives that mean it’s difficult to switch off at night. In fact, most of us wake up every morning still feeling tired, making it harder for us to tackle the day ahead. Poor sleep can also contribute to health problems and will make us generally more irritable!

Most of us claim to need 7-8 hours of sleep a night to feel refreshed, but is it really the amount of time sleeping that’s important? After all, what if it was 8 hours of interrupted or broken sleep, as opposed to 6 hours of sleeping straight through the night?

Quality versus quantity of sleep has been a topic of debate, with many factors supporting one or the other. There are some key determinants of great quality sleep, including falling asleep in 30 minutes or less, waking up no more than once a night and being awake for less than 20 minutes after initially falling asleep.

You may go to bed at a reasonable hour every night, but that doesn’t always automatically mean you’re going to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day. Our habits leading up to bedtime can have a huge impact on our sleep pattern. So, if you’re going to bed early but you spend the hour before that sat glued to your smartphone, the chances of a great night’s sleep are low.

Likewise, if you haven’t quite switched off from work, or you’re feeling stressed about the next day, your brain isn’t going to unwind as well as it could.

On the other hand, relaxing in the build-up to bedtime can ensure your body is ready to drift off means you’re likely to have a positive night’s sleep.

Creating The Right Environment

Quality sleep occurs when you have created an optimum environment. This can be done through a number of different ways; one of the most important is to turn off any electronics!

The trick is to encourage the production of melatonin; the hormone that regulates sleep. Make sure your bedroom is a comfortable, cool temperature and avoid large meals in the 3-4 hours leading up to sleep. If you are really struggling, you should incorporate foods that are rich in melatonin into your diet such as cherries, walnuts, corn and tomatoes to name a few.

Another crucial part of creating the ideal sleep environment is your mattress. Your mattress has a direct impact on quality of sleep, so make sure you invest in the perfect mattress for great sleep. Modern mattresses are enhanced by technology and are able to support your body perfectly to help you get to sleep quicker and stay asleep throughout the night. This can improve the quality of sleep you’re getting every night as your body has the chance to rest and recover.
