Sleeping Naked: Should Or Should Not?

A 2012 study published in the prestigious Sleep Journal shows that less than 10% of the American population admits to sleeping naked on a regular basis. Another international study by the National Sleep Foundation (USA) concludes that one in every three adults sleeps naked.

Although the numbers from these studies do not seem to paint a clear picture, one thing that comes out is that there has always been a debate on whether one should or should not sleep naked.

Whereas people have varying opinions, looking at some of the benefits of sleeping without any clothes and some of the arguments against it should help you make the decision on how to sleep.

Most people are either too busy to sleep or are light sleepers. Tossing and turning for several hours are what characterizes most individual's nights but what you wear to bed might be contributing to this.

The overall sleeping environment and temperature determine whether you achieve optimal sleep or not and the pajamas that you wear to sleep only lead to a temperature rise. Sleeping naked helps to prevent your body's core temperature from rising and this, in turn, helps you to fall asleep faster and also ensure that you fall into the essential restorative deep sleep state.

It also affects the ability of cells repair, and this will, in turn, affect the health of your hair and skin. And so if you want to maintain that youthful glow you should sleep naked.

Absences of clothes mean that you will not be sweaty and the production of the necessary growth cells that give you the beautiful hair and skin will not be affected

There has continually been a discussion on whether it is suitable for both men and women to sleep naked. But, what is clear is the fact that the body suffers a lot when you expose it to too much heat for long.

Men sleeping naked protect their private parts in many ways but key among them is the fact that the cold temperature keeps their sperms healthy. For women, sleeping naked is vital for the aeration of their reproductive organ, and it also aids in reducing the likelihood of getting yeast infections.

4. Boost In Oxytocin Levels

Oxytocin has several positive benefits to the body. It is a feel-good hormone, and you will be happy to get more of it. Some of the advantages of this hormone are that it helps in fighting stress, high blood pressure, and depression.

Research shows that skin-to-skin contact with your significant other when sleeping boosts the production of this important hormone. Apart from this, the skin-to-skin contact also helps couples feel close.

5. It Will Build Your Self Confidence

Research shows that people who sleep naked are happier with how they look than those that sleep with clothes. No matter how you look, sleeping naked will build your confidence. Once you get used to it, you will not care how you look when naked. The confident and freeing feeling that sleeping nude creates will help make you a better person.

6. You Save Money And Time

Sleeping naked means that you will not have to invest in stylish and expensive pajamas and this will save you some extra cash. Pajamas might not look expensive, but in the long term you end up spending a lot of money as you will always be seeking to buy the latest design or any chic pajamas that you come across. Also, you will not have to spend a lot of time washing pajamas, and so you can use this time to do something else that you enjoy more than doing laundry.

Arguments Against Sleeping Naked

Even with all the benefits of sleeping nude that experts and research have been bringing out over the years, some people are still against it. Individuals in this school of thought also have some sensible arguments against this, and it is important to know them.

1. Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is one of the main reasons why most people are against sleeping naked. It can be very embarrassing to wander around the house naked, and this is more so if you do not live alone. It is also very possible for people to walk around the neighborhood in their sleep and if you are naked this will even be more embarrassing.

2. Unexpected Periods

This reason only affects ladies, but it is a major reason why some individuals are against sleeping naked. Ladies can time their periods almost to the minute, but sometimes this is not always the case. If they come when you least expect, and you sleep naked they will not only ruin your fancy sheets but your better half will also not like it. And so women sleeping nude should always be keen about this.

3. Cold

People that live in warm climates will not have a problem sleeping naked because it is more comfortable than wearing pajamas. But, if you live in cold areas you have to think twice before you decide to go to bed in your birthday suit. You will not be able to sleep if your body feels cold and even if you have some thick beddings they might not be very helpful if you are naked. And so cold is another reason why many people are against sleeping nude.

Bottom Line

Is it good to sleep naked? This question and the debate around it will not go away anytime soon.. However, research and the countless studies on the best sleeping condition seem to conclude that there are numerous benefits of going to bed nude. But, the striking point is that you should always sleep how you find comfortable. To do this, you should make sure that the temperature of the bedroom is right all night long by using the best heated mattress pad, and make sure that you will not sleep with a blanket over the head.
