Why Is Snoring Bad?
Snoring is termed as sound while sleeping due to obstructed air movement and vibration of respiratory structure. The sound may be soft but in most cases it is very loud and unpleasant. Snoring is more common in men than women. Snoring is also more vulnerable to overweight people. Some people are occasional snorers and few people have daily regular snoring issue. Habitual snoring not only affect a person’s own sleep quality but it also effect partners sleeping habits.
Causes Of Snoring
One of the main causes of snoring is obstructed nasal airways. This issue is very common during allergy season. During sinus infection people also use to have obstructed nasal airways.
Second main cause of snoring is bulky throat tissues. Usually overweight people have bulky throat tissues so they use to snore more than a slim person.
Another main cause of snoring is usage of drugs, alcohol and sleeping pills. Usage of these things makes tongue and throat muscles too relaxed and due to which they collapse and fall back into airways. A long soft palate and uvula can narrow the opening of nose to throat. Due to collision of these structures airway becomes obstructed and snoring occurs as a result.
Although is snoring is common among all the ages and genders but it is usually more in men and overweight people. Snoring becomes more dangerous with growing age. One of the common adverse health effect that is caused due to snoring is heart disease. Permanent loud snoring can also lead in to sleep apnea. When opening between nose and throat becomes narrower the walls of throat collapse completely create a condition called sleep apnea.
Due to sleep apnea people stop breathing for some time and it is very dangerous for human health. When this problem occurs we have to consult a doctor.
Some common symptoms of sleep apnea are morning headache, awakening at night, awakening at morning feeling not rested, recent weight gain, excessive daytime sleepiness and pauses in breathing during sleeping.
When sleep apnea becomes prolonged it results in high blood pressure and may cause enlargement of heart size which increases risk of heart attack and stroke.
Snorers are usually unaware of their snoring problem, their partner usually tells them about this issue. Stroke becomes very vulnerable to the people who are having snoring or sleep apnea issue.
Due to snoring or sleep apnea blood pressure also tends to increase which leads to heart disease. The size of heart also may increase due to sleep apnea. Heartbeat of people who are having snoring issue or sleep apnea becomes irregular.
A person having snoring problem could not sleep well during night. So they feel restless in the morning. Due to which they cannot work up to their potential during daytime.
We can overcome snoring to some extent by changing our lifestyle. But if snoring is habitual or permanent we have to take some medication or have surgery to overcome this fatal problem.
Snoring is often worse when we are sleeping on our back. Sleeping on our back sometimes causes the tongue to shift to the back of the throat, which to a certain extent blocks airflow through our throat. By sleeping on our side we allow air to flow easily due to which snoring reduces or it may stop. Some people use to wear a T-shirt at night with a pocket sewn on the middle of the back to hold tennis balls and make it actually uncomfortable to sleep on their back.
Elevating our head four inches may relieve breathing and encourage our tongue and jaw to move forward. There are intentionally designed pillows available to help stop snoring by making sure our neck muscles are not curvy.
Sometime even a small loss in weight reduces snoring problem. If we gain weight around our neck, it compresses the internal diameter of the throat, which makes it vulnerable to collapse during sleeping and cause snoring.
When we are tired we sleep hard and deep and our muscles become more floppy which cause snoring. For a healthy life we must take 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily.
Refuse Smoke and Alcohol
People who smoke are more vulnerable to snoring than non smokers and Insomnia causes. Alcohol, sleeping pills, and Insomnia cause the muscles in the throat and obstruct with breathing. Secretions in our nose and soft palate become stickier when we're dehydrated and this can increase our snoring problem.
When you are stopped up in the nasal passage because of a cold, the flu or allergies, you are likely to snore. If the snoring starts in the nasal passage, you will have to try to keep them open to permit air to pass through it slowly instead of quickly. Try taking a hot shower before you bed down for the night. This will open your nasal passage to reduce your snoring.
We must avoid taking big meal at late night before sleep time. Because full stomach push up against our diaphragm and effect breathing. Also drinking milk and other dairy products makes us more vulnerable to the snoring.
To help the throat and tongue get stronger, you have to do exercises on your throat. These will avoid the problem of over-relaxation in the throat. Start by connecting your upper and lower jaws. Open your mouth but concentrate on pressing molars wide apart without overstretching them. Do these mouth exercises about 15 times. You will feel the back of your mouth open.
Dust particles in our pillows can also cause snoring. These dust particles cause allergic reactions that lead to snoring. We must put our pillows in air fluff cycle once every month and must change them every six months to prevent us from the dust particles and other allergies.
If snoring problem is severe and these changes in lifestyle could not stop it then we can have surgery to stop it. Surgery is generally done in back of throat or roof of mouth or on nose using instruments like microwave, laser or scalpel.
We can also reduce snoring problem by using oral appliances mainly constructed by dentists or by using other appliances such as nasal dilators. For sleep apnea patient CPAP continuous positive airways pressure appliance is used which blows room air into back of throat and prevent it from the collapse.
